Once in a while, it’s nice to get away and spend some time with your family on vacations. Whether for professional purposes or spending some time away from the busy city life, you’re always worried about leaving your cat home while on vacation.

If parting from them wasn’t haunting enough, the thought of them trapped for hours, or worse, starving, hits even hard. If this resembles your train of thought right now, worry no more because we got your back!

Here are some tips on leaving your cat at home while on vacation.

Hire Someone

Cats are pretty independent, and most cats will do good on their own if you leave for a night or two. But this might not be the best option if the time is longer than that. Therefore, one of the best options, in this case, is that you hire a professional pet sitter.

But, make sure it’s someone you trust, so you can leave with peace of mind that your kitty is in safe hands.

You can pay the pet sitter to check in on the cat, maybe once a day. Or you can also leave your cat at someone else’s home if it isn’t super territorial.

Opt For Boarding Facilities

Another similar, but more expensive option to the above one is boarding facilities.

These facilities can ensure that your cat is taken care of in your absence, but can be stress inducing for your cat too.  Cats like their own environment and are territorial, so disturbances such as dogs barking, whining, howling, cats meowing,  noise, different smells, and different routines are not always desirable.

You can check for reviews available online or ask someone you know about the services a particular boarding facility offers. Additionally, you can take a tour of the facility and ensure it has everything your kitty will require.

Take Care Of The Necessities Before You Leave

If you’re comfortable leaving your cat home alone, you should also ensure it has everything it needs.   Your cat is already sad about you leaving, so make sure it has the appropriate facilities to survive. Also, don’t forget to make the cat’s bed  and clean out the litter box.

Offer Entertainment

Remember that some, if not most cats, can get depressed and lonely if left alone. And they will miss you.

So. leave enough things in the house to entertain themselves before you go. It might help them feel more normal while you’re away.

cat toys

These can include turning on the radio or TV, putting up a DVD or a show your cat watches. Fishtanks are great entertainment for cats.  Moreover, you can open up the blinds to allow your cat to view outside, even  if you’re leaving for a few hours.

Providing your cat’s favourite toys, like a cat tree, etc. and leaving some treats within its reach is also a good idea to make it feel comfortable and secure.

Ensure Safety Precaution

Ensuring safety precautions is necessary, as leaving a cat alone is the same as leaving a baby.  Put all the harmful things away from its reach. Unplug electricity sockets and try to stock the wires out, as you don’t want a shocked cat when you get home.  Moreover, keep the inner doors open to prevent your cat from getting locked away.

To protect items in the house, put away any breakable objects, especially glass products etc. Not only those, but also secure away flammable items to prevent your companion from doing anything that might “burn”.  Also, keep sharp things away from its reach.

Final Words

We understand the sorrow and worry accompanying your departure when you have to leave your favorite feline companion at home. But there’s always something you can do about it.   Especially if you are going for an extended period, say three to four days, you definitely need someone to guard your cat and prevent it from suffering from separation anxiety.

Make sure you provide it with the necessary facilities and adequate attention, even when you’re not there to give it to it first-hand. These tips on leaving your cat home while on vacation will help you take care of your kitty better every time you go away.
